Doctrine / Principles / Applications:
Why? Faith in Jesus Christ.
What? The Doctrine of Christ -Principles and Ordinances of the Gospel.
How? In this talk, Sister Spannaus is teaching us a pattern of application by
1. asking tough questions,
2. a Bible / Scripture story,
3. likening the scriptures to ourselves.
The BIG Questions:
Have you ever wondered how you can be faithful to God while living in a world of sin?
Where do you get the strength to go forward and continue doing good?
How do you experience true joy?
When kids and teens (and even adults have these questions - they (we) may not know how to put the question into a sentence like this. How else would this show up?
David and Goliath
For Kids: David and Goliath - get to know the story and share it with your kids in multiple ways.
A retelling in story form for children (from Children’s Stories and How to Tell Them)
especially for the 13 year old boys (Rap Battle)
Other Underdog stories with Giants
Jack and the Beanstalk
Odysseus and Polyphemus
For you: Put yourself in the story from all angles. What do the stones represent in all of these scenarios?
David, Goliath, Israel
Me, Mortality Problems, My Exaltation
Jesus, Sin, Me
Me as Parent, World, Kids
Bishop, False Ideas, Ward Members
Prophet, Culture, Church Members
Topic Study
Sister Spannaus’ “5 stones”: Learn as much as you can about these topics from different church sources. Examine your stones from all angles, getting to know every part of them, strengthening them, polishing them, and keeping track of them, imagine them as weapons and/ or defensive protections. Make them glow!
Here are some tools:
Record what you learn about the topic and yourself.
Loving God
Faith in Christ
Knowing My True Identity
Daily Repentance
Accessing God’s Power
Your Testimony (see her definition of testimony it is a good one!)
Affirmations: Sister Spannaus teaches us how she uses affirmations:
“Everything changes when I know who I really am. When I doubt my abilities, I often repeat to myself in my mind or out loud, “I am a daughter of God, I am a daughter of God,” as many times as I need until I again feel confident to keep going.”
More Affirmations from this talk:
Thinking about Christ brings me peace and gives me hope.
I feel joy in doing good.
Journaling:
Look unto me(Christ) in every thought; doubt not, fear not. D&C 6:36 (read this verse and a few before and after. Imagine David and his faith when faced with Goliath (where did it come from?) And write about these questions:
When has God strengthened me, and what have I already overcome?
Where in my life can I replace doubt and fear with Faith in Christ?
Discuss:
What other strengths do we need to acquire to remain faithful to God and therefore overcome the world?
Some stones may be more sure than others. Which stones have a strong connection to Christ, and which stones may be worldly and weak?
Promise:
Christ is eager to accompany us on the journey of our lives. I promise you, as you hold on to the iron rod, you will walk hand in hand with Jesus Christ. He will be guiding you, and He will be teaching you. By His hand, you will be able to bring down every Goliath that appears in your life.
